Chasm

we are standing
on identical mountains.
there is a gulf of space between us –
we try to jump, but mostly
we just fall.

so instead
we call out to each other.
we talk across this space and then,
it is not quite so wide
as it was.

the words change us:
we see that our mountains
are the same – they’re just far apart,
different in space and time
but somehow shared.

in the moment
that we realise this
the chasm shifts – no longer impossible.
we jump with tears into
each other’s arms.

then it returns.
the gap opens it maw and
pulls our mountains apart once more –
we forget they are the same.
but we’ll remember.
